As our second Horizon 2020 project, piqlFilm-GO aims to upscale and commercialise our manufacturing for ultra-secure storage and long-term preservation of digital data while working to mature the production of our eternal data carrier, piqlFilm. 

This project will ultimately finetune and enhance our technology to the enable rapid production and maturation of piqlFilm.

PROJECT PARTICIPANTS

1. Boneheadz

With its long-standing experience as digital system integrator and excellent contacts of the management to the markets, boneheadz will be the end-point of the whole piqlFilm improvement process. It will use all the knowledge and work results of other project members to test and ultimately validate the film reels – the medium for the long term digital data preservation. The envisaged products and services will be tested and ultimately validated with well-respected end-clients across Europe as well as internationally. Thanks to that, boneheadz will be able to offer interactive feedback to Piql, Filmotec and InnovisCoat.

2. Filmotec

The main goal for the FilmoTec GmbH is the transfer the highest resolution piql film from the prototype stage into the production process. Sustainability, careful use of resources, environmental protection and work-friendly conditions are included in the project work. The transfer will be done through 5 stages; upscaling emulsion in the production process, determining development regime, creating test systems for the coated film, converting coated rolls of film, i.e. cutting, perforating, signing and packaging, and lastly distribution logistics for large amount of film.

3. InovisCoat

Based on the development of the appropriate emulsions and pilot coating by FilmoTec the coating scaleup into production scale will be done by InovisCoat: We will transfer the developed prototype film P3 into the production coating process, examine whether the selected raw materials are suitable for use in large systems (up to 1000 liters) and replace if necessary. InovisCoat and Filmotec will document the entire process according to ISO9001-2015.

4. Piql AS

Impact

Our bold innovation is meeting the growing need for offline, secure data storage. This project will further adapt and mature our technology to be a competitive data storage solution. It will have a significant impact on our end-clients, offering savings of up to 80% on long-term preservation cost. In addition, it guarantees future authenticity and availability of their information by using open source formats on an offline storage medium.

Implementation

The 24month project began on 1 September 2018 and will be achieved through 6 work packages:

1. piqlFilm performance maturation

In this work package, we aim to increase the piqlFilm current performance in terms of film resistance and storage capacity

2. piqlFilm production scale-up

In this work package, we aim to transfer the highperformance piqlFilm production from laboratory (150 sqm of film per day) to industrial scale (2.000 sqm of film per day).

3. Large scale piloting validation and demonstration

In this work package, we aim to demonstrate the enhanced performance of piqlFilm through piloting, testing, training and evaluating. 

4. Market and regulatory monitoring

In this work package, we aim to understand the market to ensure we position our services effectively. We will also review our position and prepare for post project exploitation. 

5. Dissemination, exploitation and communication

In this work package, we aim to ensure that all relevant stakeholders and members of the public are updated on our progress and achievements. We will provide targeted information and facilitate access to knowledge through the dissemination materials. 

This will be achieved through a stakeholder engagement and communication plan to disseminate the results of our project.

6. Management 

In this work package, we aim to ensure the project runs smoothly. This includes a number of administrative and management processes including risk management, financial management, a business innovation plan and commercialization plan.
